What We Do
At ABI, we have been doing Entomology in Calgary, Alberta since 2014. We are knowledgeable professionals in taxonomy, outreach, education, and scientific consulting. We are a CABIN registered lab for aquatic taxonomy.
Taxonomy
Identification of aquatic Invertebrates and terrestrial arthropods.
Outreach/Education
Media interview and consulting. Education (pre-school to adult), hosting workshop and bioblitzs; museum curation.
Scientific Consulting
Design of biodiversity surveys, data analysis and report writing.
Who We Are
John is our chief taxonomist and has been an entomologist since he was 5 years old. He has been a professional entomologist at the University of Guelph, Canadian Forestry Service (Sault Ste Marie. ON), Royal Ontario Museum, Beaty Biodiversity Museum (University of British Columbia) and in the Invertebrate Collection, University of Calgary. John is a Professional Biologist in Alberta, has the Society for Fresh Water Science Certification (SFS), is CABIN certified Field Technician and has numerous publications on Diptera.
Diane is a Professional Agrologist in Alberta and has been practising entomology for 10 years and runs ABl. She is CABIN certified to the Project Manager level and she is also a sessional lecturer in botany at Ambrose University in Calgary.


Diane Edwards - Principal
PhD, the University of British Columbia, MSc, BSc(Agr) University of Guelph. Registered Professional Agrologist In Alberta specializing in taxonomy of aquatic invertebrates and prairie spiders. She is CABIN certified to the Project Manager Level.


John Swann - Head Taxonomist
Registered Professional Biologist in Alberta. PhD Candidate University of Toronto, MSc, BSc University of Guelph. Expert in the identification of diptera and proficient in most insect orders, SFS certified in aquatic taxonomy and a CABIN certified Field Technician
